Granville is one of the oldest railway suburbs in Western Sydney, with a heritage main street around Good Street and South Street, tight streets of old cottages and 1960s unit blocks, and industrial land running down to the Duck River. It sits at the junction of Parramatta Road, Woodville Road and the M4, which makes it quick to reach but also puts a lot of workshops and trade premises inside a residential suburb.

Granville has some of the oldest sewer runs in the region. The cottages on the streets between the station and Parramatta Road went up between the 1890s and the 1930s, and where the earthenware sewer has not been replaced it is now more root than pipe, with plane trees along the footpaths and figs in the older gardens doing the damage. Galvanised water lines in the same houses rust from the inside and go quietly for years before a wall or a floor gets wet. The three-storey unit blocks near the station are 1960s and 70s builds with shared stacks that block from grease and copper that has reached pinhole age. On the industrial side toward the Duck River and along Parramatta Road there is trade waste, backflow devices and burst mains on premises that run around the clock. The low ground on the eastern side of the suburb toward Duck River and A'Becketts Creek holds water in a big storm, and the sewer surcharges through overflow gullies when the creeks are high.
